PixInsight is an image processing software package for working with astrophotos. It provides many of the same tools found in commercial packages, but is FOSS (free and open source) and runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. PixInsight is an extensible, fully featured processing pipeline. Many of the tools available in PixInsight are found in other imaging packages, but they have been developed to work together with a uniform look-and-feel. It is designed to be a comprehensive image processing package that can serve both as a stand-alone application or as a plug-in for other software, such as K3CCDTools, Astroart and MaxIm DL. Its core functionality includes image stacking, noise reduction, deconvolution, flat fielding, image sharpening and enhancement. PixInsight doesn't provide any imaging; it provides the processing tools to produce images. It was developed by an international team of developers, with input from amateur and professional astrophotographers. PixInsight started as a rewrite of the ArcView (ANSI C) astronomy program called ProCE (for "Professional Certificate Explorer"), using the GDAL open source vector graphics library for raster image analysis. GDAL was later replaced by the Image Science Toolkit (ISTK). In 2002, the first alpha version of ProCE was released under the name PixInsight. The first version was a total rewrite of ProCE, based on a brand new set of libraries. PixInsight is written in C++ and Python, and has a Qt graphical user interface via QT4. It has been designed to use multiple processors for faster processing speed. The software uses Qt as its GUI framework because it provides a cross-platform solution that allows developers to write both applications and cross-platform libraries using an identical API on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux platforms. PixInsight's visual approach was inspired by the user interface of another image processing software package named ACP. PixInsight 1.0 was released on June 18, 2005 with read/write support for 32-bit and 16-bit TIFF images with 8 bit per channel, and read only support for most other file formats. The recent versions of PixInsight can be compiled for 32 and 64 bit environments on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX operating systems. PixInsight is designed to be an extensible application through the use of plugin modules with a standard interface written in Python. cfa1e77820
